Film Screening ‘The garden where the praties grow’

Saturday 8th August, 2026

Where the Praties Grow is a compelling documentary that explores the story of the potato—known in Ireland as the “pratie”—through traditional Irish music, song, and dance. It reflects on the deep historical and cultural significance of the potato in Irish life, particularly its role in shaping both daily survival and national identity. Once a staple food, the potato became a powerful symbol of hardship, resilience, and hope, especially in the context of Ireland’s tragic history.

Filmed over three days at the original founders’ building at Seed Savers in County Clare, the documentary captures raw, live performances by some of Ireland’s finest traditional musicians. These performances are interwoven with interviews from organic growers and biodiversity experts, adding insight into sustainability and the potato’s wider cultural impact. The film, produced by Tommy Hayes and directed by Anthony Hughes, blends music, history, and visual storytelling into an immersive tribute to Ireland’s enduring spirit and heritage.
